Education, education, um
By El CidI'm not unreasonable with my kids. I guide them as much as I can but I also give them room to breathe.
If they want McDonalds, I will get them some, once in a while, but only if they eat their veg and try out other foods from other parts of the world.
It's a big wide world out there. Explore it! I order them, with mixed success.
If they want to play for hours with a GameBoy, I'll buy them one, but only if they do their homework and read the books I get them.
If they want to go to EuroDisney or to check out the odd feature-length cartoon flick, I'll take them, maybe, but only if they also come with me to the occasional museum or art gallery.
So imagine my pride when my 7-year old son and 6-year old daughter eagerly took to their English language headphones when we went to the Reina Sofia modern art museum in Madrid.
We looked at paintings by Juan Gris, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and I spoke to them about impressionism and cubism.
We stood in awe in front of Picasso's black and white masterpiece -- Guernica -- and they peppered me with questions about it. (They recognised it because we have a framed copy of it at home and their curiosity was aroused because I said it "was famous").
With chest swelled I wondered into the next gallery on Salvador Dali. We soon converged on the same painting.
Both kids tapped in the appropriate number into their recorded guides, while I gazed at the surrealist curves before me. It was an odd and busy painting. Dali's often are.
Hmmm. There's a babble of Japanese tourists around it. It must be famous, I thought. I wonder what it's called.
My eyes widened into dinner plates as I found out: El Gran Masturbador. God, what are they are listening to!?
"Ahem. Come on kids. Let's go get a burger."
"Yeayyy!"
I mean, what do you do?
